Curtis Woodhouse has taken to Twitter to label Steven Gerrard leaving Ibrox a head-scratcher as he suggested that Rangers should look to appoint Dean Smith as his successor.

It was announced on Thursday that Gerrard has now left the Gers. The 41-year-old was named as the new manager of Aston Villa after the Premier League side sacked Smith at the weekend.

Gerrard’s decision may divide many. He won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers. And he was always going to struggle to take the club further in the Europa League, having reached the round of 16 on two occasions.

But the Light Blues top the table this season. Villa meanwhile, are currently looking to end five-match winless run and move out of touching distance of the bottom three.

Plenty clearly feel that it is a good move in Gerrard’s managerial career. Villa are a club with huge potential. They should certainly be much higher up the table.

But Woodhouse – who, of course, played for the Villans’ rivals Birmingham City – has insisted that he has taken a backward step leaving Ibrox. He also shared who should get the job following his departure…

Dean Smith well worth considering as Rangers begin life without Steven Gerrard

Smith did a brilliant job for the large part of his time at Villa. He guided the club to promotion, having taken over when they were languishing in the bottom-half of the Championship table.

And there were times last season when they threatened to challenge for the European places in the top-flight.

Smith encouraged his side to play an exciting brand of attacking football. So the Rangers squad may not find the transition too difficult to deal with.

The Englishman’s stock remains high despite his sacking. And he would surely jump at the chance to head to Ibrox immediately following his departure from Villa Park.
