Crystal Palace have added another new face to their squad with the capture of West Ham United centre back James Tomkins on a five year deal for a fee of £10 million.
Tomkins, who appeared 25 times in the Premier League for the Irons last term, follows Andros Townsend and Steve Mandanda through the Selhurst Park door in what is proving to be a very busy month for the South London side.
The capture of Tomkins will be especially pleasing to coach Alan Pardew, who has never been blessed with a great deal of competition for places in central defence in his 18 months with the Eagles. The 27-year-old will now compete with Scott Dann and Damien Delaney for a starting spot in Palace’s back four.
The deal looks to be fairly satisfactory for all parties. Tomkins had fallen behind Winston Reid and Angelo Ogbonna in Slaven Bilic’s pecking order, and game time may have proved hard to come by at the Olympic Stadium as West Ham look to build on last season’s impressive sixth place finish.
The Hammers have received a fairly generous fee for their academy graduate, and providing they can acquire some more defensive cover, felt that £10 million was too good an offer to turn down.
Tomkins expressed his excitement at joining Palace, saying “It’s a massive club and there’s a nice feeling about the place, a feeling we’re going places here.”
Crystal Palace fans will certainly hope so.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Tomkins’ arrival:

Time will tell if Tomkins proves value for money.
