Crystal Palace should cash in on Patrick Van Aanholt to improve attack in January
Crystal Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt is reportedly being tracked by Serie A outfit Roma ahead of the January transfer window.
According to the Sun, the Italian club are preparing to make a £25million raid in the New Year for the left-back and consider him one of their main targets.
The 28-year-old has become an important player at Selhurst Park and is an ever-present in Roy Hodgson’s starting XI.
He is a left-sided flyer that is strong defensively at left-back, but also has plenty of attacking traits and helps out in the final third.
In an ideal Palace would surely love to keep consistent defender Van Aanholt, but the £25million could be a great sum for him and it potentially allows them to spend elsewhere in January.
Palace’s main problem this season is in attack, where they have scored just 14 goals in their 17 Premier League games.
The Eagles are three points above the drop zone as it stands and are in danger of being firmly in the relegation picture if they don’t improve in front of goal.
Palace need some extra ammunition at striker to help support Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend, which is why splashing out £20million-plus in January on a new centre-forward makes sense.
Selling Van Aanholt may be an easy way to do that and in the long run it could help them reshape their attack with the funds from his depature.
