Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has told The Mirror that he tried to sign Manchester United wonderkid Mason Greenwood on loan last summer.

Palace are safe from relegation and play the Red Devils this evening with nothing more than professional pride to play for.

The Eagles could have pushed on even further had they landed the youngster, given that he’s enjoyed a stunning breakthrough campaign during 2019/20.

Greenwood has netted 17 goals in all competitions this season, registering five assists in the process.

Hodgson has been blown away by Greenwood and admitted a desire to take him to Selhurst Park.

He told The Mirror: “Mason is a fantastic player. We’ve known about him for a while and in actual fact, I think we might even have enquired about him at the start of the season if there was any chance of him coming on loan.

“Of course you get the answer ‘no chance’ because they seem his as one of theirs. It wasn’t a difficult spot though.

“I think people all over the Premier League have realised there is a real talent on the books of Manchester United and it’s been just a question of time before he gets his chance.”

Jordan Ayew is Palace’s top goalscorer this season with nine goals, which is the same amount as Greenwood’s league tally.

United have a proud history of producing their own players and Greenwood looks to the next star off the conveyor belt of talent.

Palace supporters must be pretty satisfied with their season, although they will look to arrest a run of five straight defeats between now and the end of the season.

How Hodgson would love to find himself another Greenwood ahead of next season.
