'Crying': Some Aston Villa fans cannot believe referee Kevin Friend's actions yesterday
Aston Villa fans have praised Kevin Friend for dishing out a yellow card to their own supporters on Saturday.
Dean Smith’s side were taking part in a pre-season friendly against Bristol City yesterday when the official opted to show a yellow card to the section of the away crowd.
It came after they were jokingly taunting him that he is a s**t version of Mike Dean, as you can watch here.
As all of this was taking place, Friend was busy setting up Villa for a free-kick deep in Bristol City’s half, so he could clearly hear the away support behind the goal.
The Villa faithful then proceeded to ask Friend to give them a wave and he reacted in a brilliant fashion by pulling out a yellow card and showing it to the crowd.
A couple of seasons ago, the same referee disallowed a controversial stoppage-time goal for Villa during their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.
And for some Villa supporters that has now been forgotten about as they praised him for showing his sense of humour.
On-field officials get a bit of stick from pundits and supporters, but it was great to see the other side of them yesterday.
Of course, when the serious business kicks off in a few weeks time then all will be back to normal.
But for the time being, it seems as though Friend has made some friends because of his actions at Ashton Gate:
