Cristian Romero shares what Daniel Levy must do at Tottenham to compete with Man City and Liverpool

Cristian Romero has shared what he believes Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy must do to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

Spurs have made great progress under Ange Postecoglou this season after a largely miserable campaign last time out. For the first time since 2008-09, Tottenham missed out on qualifying for Europe after a dismal season.

But against all odds, Postecoglou has Spurs in the hunt for a top-four finish, even after losing their former talisman Harry Kane over the summer.

As well as the obvious improvements on the pitch, Spurs have also revamped their approach in the transfer market. Summer signings such as Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have proven to be big hits this term.

And Cristian Romero believes Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must continue with the ‘positive changes’ he’s implemented at the club over the past year.

Romero sends message to Spurs chairman Levy

Speaking to Sky Sports, Romero admitted he’s the happiest he’s been at Spurs since joining back in 2021.

The Argentine believes the club is heading in the right direction and has urged Levy to keep up the good work off the pitch.

“You could maybe say I’m enjoying this season the most since I’ve been here,” Romero said. “This season the club have made some quite important changes which I think have helped to connect us with the supporters, as well as helping to grow and improve the club.

“And by continuing with those important changes, we can aim to achieve even greater things. At the end of the day, the key thing for us players, who spend a relatively short time, is to ensure we leave our mark and make an impression here.

“We do that by winning trophies and winning silverware doesn’t just depend on having a good manager and a squad of 25 or 26 players.

“It depends on the atmosphere you experience here every day where you need to feel that extra pressure that we put on ourselves and that everyone around here puts on us, who all want to achieve stuff and do well.

“Recently and this season changes have come about within the club in every aspect, in order to keep improving things. But these things can take time because I don’t think you can just start winning trophies from one day to the next.

“But if the chairman [Daniel Levy] and the Club owners continue with the positive and important changes, we will get closer to being able to compete at the very top with clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool as I think today, they seem to be the ones who have made a difference in that sense.”

Tottenham’s switch in approach on the pitch has often made the headlines this season but their work behind the scenes has improved dramatically.

Spurs had been struggling to identify the right players under former managers, with plenty of signings not working out, including the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Djed Spence, just to name a couple.

But recent signings have proven to be more reliable, with many coming in and making an instant impact under Postecoglou.

That’s partly down to the Aussie’s work on the training pitches but it also requires key figures at Tottenham to identify the right players.

Spurs have some way to go before they will be able to compete with the likes of City and Liverpool. But it would appear they are finally on the right track once again at least.
