Cristian Romero says 22-year-old Tottenham star is already ‘one of the best’ in the Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur vice-captain Cristian Romero has hailed Micky van de Ven as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Spurs have had a number of standout players in the Premier League this season, but if we had to pick one, we’d go with Van de Ven, who has been incredible since joining Tottenham last summer.

Tottenham signed Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg last summer in a £43 million deal (Standard).

There were a few concerns about how the Dutchman would adapt to the intensity of the Premier League having never played in England before.

However, Van de Ven hit the ground running at Tottenham, and he has been outstanding almost every time he has played so far this season.

Speaking to Tottenham’s Matchday Programme, Romero heaped praise on his centre-back partner. He branded the 22-year-old as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Romero said: “It’s a real pleasure to be playing alongside Micky. I think as a footballer you know when you’ve got a good connection with someone and a good relationship.

“As players, we are similar in how we play, our styles complement each other. Every training session and game, I’m getting a better relationship, our rapport is getting better.

“He’s a good person, form can come and go, but I would say, currently he’s one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. Hopefully, this relationship will continue to grow.”

Tottenham’s Van de Ven has been one of the signings of the season

Micky van de Ven is a fan favourite at Tottenham and rightly so.

It’s not easy for a player to move to the Premier League and hit the ground running, especially for a 22-year-old who didn’t really have a lot of experience under his belt.

Van de Ven, however, has been incredible. He has undoubtedly been one of the signings of the season, and he was fantastic in the game against Crystal Palace this afternoon as well.

The exciting thing for Tottenham fans is that Van de Ven is still only 22. He’s nowhere near his prime yet, which means he’ll only become better in the coming years.
