‘I always thought’: Cristian Romero says one Spurs player has been key lately…and it’s not Harry Kane

It’s safe to say that Tottenham defender, Cristian Romero, has settled in well to life in north London and is firmly established in Antonio Conte’s team.

Romero has been outstanding since his arrival from Italy and since getting back from injury, has looked like being one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

But as well as Romero, a number of other Spurs players have looked good lately. And while the likes of Kane and Son are getting the plaudits from the media, Romero has said that the form of midfielder, Rodrigo Bentancur, is a big reason why the team is playing well.

“Bentancur I was aware of from Italy, I always thought he was the kind of player who could cut it in the Premier League. What’s surprised me is the level at which he’s doing really, really well. How important he’s become for us so quickly,” Romero told The Athletic.

“The performances of the team in general speak for each player but in particular speak for him and how well he has done for us.”

Bentancur was seen as a steady but not brilliant signing in January. However, the midfielder has put any notion he was a last gasp addition to bed by proving his worth in the middle of the park.

Nobody expected Bentancur to be quite as good as he’s been but in the midfield with Hojbjerg, he’s been truly excellent.

He does keep things simple at times. But the big thing Bentancur brings to the table is how he’ll take the ball in tight areas and play forward, allowing Spurs to spring breaks on teams with their forward runners.

Conte has made good signings since taking over and Tottenham fans can be excited for what the summer might bring.
