Cristian Gamboa scores first goal since Celtic exit, and first club goal since 2010

This summer saw Celtic move Costa Rican defender Cristian Gamboa on after a difficult period at Celtic Park.

Gamboa was allowed to leave at the end of his contract this summer and in August he found a new club, German second-tier outfit VfL Bochum.

The Bhoys snapped up Gamboa in the summer of 2016 from West Brom as cover for regular first-choice option Mikael Lustig.

However, Gamboa struggled to have an impact when given a chance for Celtic and played just 31 times over the course of three seasons in Glasgow.

One thing he never looked likely to do at Celtic was score. In fact, Gamboa has scored just one goal in his entire club career, back in 2010 playing for Norwegian side Fredrikstad against Strommen.

Well, yesterday, the former Celtic man doubled his tally.

Gamboa, who has scored three goals for the Costa Rica national team, scored Bochum’s third goal to go 3-2 up against Karlsruher in the 2.Bundesliga yesterday. Unfortunately, his side went on to concede a 90th-minute equaliser in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Celtic fans will no doubt be pleased to hear Gamboa has finally found the net even if it never truly clicked for the full-back at Parkhead. Hopefully, Gamboa won’t have to wait nine years for the next one.
