Craig Gordon has posted a heartfelt message to Celtic supporters on Instagram as he confirmed that he would not be signing a new deal with the Scottish champions – and numerous Celtic players responded.
Gordon, 37, has been a crucial part of Celtic’s pursuit of 10 in a row, playing a part in six of their nine consecutive Scottish Premiership triumphs since he joined in 2014. He has clocked up 262 appearances for the Hoops.
However, the 54-time Scotland international dropped down the pecking order during 2018-19 with Scott Bain being preferred. Fraser Forster then returned to the club on loan last summer, limiting Gordon to just six games.
Gordon has since spoke of how Celtic have offered him a contract, and was more than open in stating that St. Mirren have offered him a deal. Now, the veteran has confirmed he will be leaving Celtic completely.
Certainly worthy of iconic status at Celtic, Gordon leaves a season before Celtic embark on their 10-in-a-row campaign. It remains to be seen if Forster remains at Parkhead for next season, or returns to Southampton.
Plenty of Celtic players – past and present – responded to Gordon’s post. Mikael Lustig sent a touching message, while Erik Sviatchenko described Gordon as a “legend”. Scott Brown, Mikey Johnston and Patrick Roberts also responded.
