Craig Burley criticises Tottenham boss Antonio Conte for whinging
The game hardly needs any additional stakes. But there is certainly a huge amount riding on Sunday’s meeting between the two sides.
The league leaders have the opportunity to go eight points clear at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Tottenham could end the day back in the top-four. But they are desperately searching for some consistency.
Burley criticises Antonio Conte
Right now, it is so hard to tell what direction Spurs will head in. When they appointed Conte, it seemed inevitable that they would soon be challenging for titles.
But just over a year on, it is not clear whether the Italian will indeed be the man to end their current drought. Certainly, the next few months are going to be crucial in shaping what the immediate future holds for Spurs.
One person Conte has not impressed has been Burley, with the pundit backing Arsenal to win on Sunday. He also hit out at the Spurs boss for not holding back at venting his frustrations.
“I’m just not convinced with this Tottenham side. They got a great victory at Crystal Palace. But you know Arsenal will dominate possession. We know what Tottenham will do. I fancy Arsenal for a win, I really do,” he told ESPN.
“How that transcends into the rest of the season remains to be seen. But I’m fed up with the constant whinging from Antonio Conte. Just always trying to find an excuse.”
Tottenham boss deserves criticism, but also some breathing space
Firstly, it must be noted that Conte has had an extremely tough few months personally. Of course, everyone could be going through some terrible things away from the game. But it is public knowledge that Conte has had to deal with the losses of some important people in his life.
Obviously, that is likely to have an impact on the Tottenham boss. He felt unable to handle media duties around the FA Cup tie with Portsmouth following the tragic loss of Gianluca Vialli.
That should perhaps be kept in mind when criticising Conte’s manner.
From a football perspective, it cannot be forgotten that Conte has enjoyed success at almost club he has managed. So he will not be happy with Tottenham being fifth.
But he will be angry with himself, too.
Conte deserves criticism as well. Some Tottenham fans are clearly nowhere near as confident as they were when he arrived in 2021.
But he is far from being the only manager who expresses his discontent publicly.
