Duncan Watmore has found a new club following his departure from Sunderland in the summer.

The 26-year-old left the Black Cats after seven years at the Stadium of Light, much of that time sadly plagued by injuries.

Watmore was considered one of the brightest young talents in England at one point, featuring regularly for Sam Allardyce’s side in the Premier League.

However, two serious knee injuries set the former England Under-21 forward back massively, and in his absence, Sunderland dropped from the top flight to the third tier.

While Watmore didn’t have many injury problems last season, he nonetheless struggled to find form and hold down a regular place in Phil Parkinson’s side.

And with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, his release wasn’t a huge surprise, particularly as he was one of Sunderland’s highest earners.

Watmore is staying put in the North East, penning a contract with Championship side Middlesbrough until January after a successful trial period.

Boro boss Neil Warnock was delighted to make the player a formal addition to his first team squad.

“I’m ever so pleased we’ve been able to get him on board,” he told the club website. “He’s done very well in training and he’s a smashing lad.

“He fits in really well in the dressing and I’m hoping that he can give us a bit of something different.

“It’s only a short-term contract and it’s up to him to show us that he deserves a longer one.”

Boro fans and Sunderland fans alike welcomed his move to Teesside on social media:
