Coventry youngster Sam McCallum reacts to reported interest from Liverpool

Young Coventry City defender Sam McCallum has expressed his surprise over recent reports linking him with a move to Premier League giants Liverpool.

McCallum, 19, has been in impressive form for the League One side this season which has apparently caught the attention of the Reds (Daily Mail) and also Leeds United.

The starlet has made 16 appearances for the Sky Blues so far this season and scored two goals.

When asked about the links to Liverpool, the Canterbury-born teen couldn’t hide his excitement.

He said (Mirror): “It does make me smile. I did see that and I suppose it doesn’t get much bigger than that but like I said, it’s just in the background and nothing has come of it.

“It makes me feel happy but you obviously don’t know what’s true and what’s not, so…

“It’s just in the background and until anything comes up I am just focused on Coventry. My head is not anywhere else at the moment. I just want to get minutes at Coventry.”

TBR’s view – Liverpool eyeing another gem?

Liverpool have a lot of talented young players keen to make an impact in the first-team at Anfield.

The likes of Ki-Jana Hoever, Sepp van den Berg, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones have all caught the eye this season.

Perhaps Liverpool see McCallum as possible future backup for Andy Robertson.

At the moment though McCallum probably needs more time to develop in League One – maybe the Reds will come calling after he’s been around a little longer.

If City can seal promotion back to the Championship where he can test himself, then that would surely allow Liverpool to gauge whether or not he is worth pursuing.
