Sunderland have confirmed on their official website that they have signed goalkeeper Lee Burge after he left Coventry City.

The 26-year-old has signed a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light having left the Sky Blues after 15 years at the club altogether.

He said: “This is a club that can offer me everything I want, and the stature of the club is incredible. As a player, you want to train at the best facilities and play in the best stadiums, and this is by far the best place I have experienced. I just can’t wait to get going.”

Jack Ross added: “I’m delighted to welcome Lee to Sunderland. It was an area we were looking to strengthen and he boasts a wealth of experience within the EFL.  Throughout the last 12 months we have worked hard to bring the right type of players to the club, and I’m sure Lee will fit seamlessly into the group.”

But Burge, who let in four goals against Sunderland when Coventry visited in April and won 5-4, does not appear to have too many admirers among the Sky Blue fanbase.

Many of them took to Twitter in disbelief that Sunderland have signed Burge with their ambitions to get promotion from League One at the second time of asking.

That 5-4 match appears to have rekindled an old historic rivalry between two clubs who are arguably the biggest in League One and Coventry supporters are in hysterics about the Black Cats signing Burge…
