Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek and could find engineering a deal much easier now that Milan have confirmed the re-signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic – but could the Swede’s move now benefit Leeds?
The Sun have claimed Newcastle want Milan’s ace Piatek, who has scored 15 goals for Milan since joining the club just under 12 months ago. Milan splashed out on Piatek after he netted 19 goals in 21 games for Genoa during the first half of 2018-19.
He moved to Milan in January 2019 and continued his excellent form during the second half of last season, scoring 11 in 21. It saw him finish 2018-19 with stunning stats of 30 goals in 42 games, but he has struggled to replicate that this season.
The 10-time Poland international has only netted four goals in 17 games, and the signing of Ibrahimovic is now likely to push Piatek down the pecking order. Newcastle are interested in luring Piatek to Tyneside, as per The Sun.
Joelinton is struggling after scoring just one goal following his £40million move, while Andy Carroll is yet to score following his return to the club. Dwight Gayle remains third choice, but the Telegraph will only let him leave if his £15m asking price is met.
But The Sun’s report claims Gayle will be allowed to leave Newcastle if Piatek signs, while the Daily Star have reiterated that Gayle is a target for the Whites. If Newcastle sign Piatek, Leeds have a much better chance of landing Gayle.
Leeds are likely to want Gayle given his stunning record in the Championship. He has scored 59 times in 100 Championship matches, a record much better than Patrick Bamford’s goal return in the second tier.
Worldwide superstar Ibrahimovic could help Leeds finally bring Gayle to Elland Road after months of speculation, then, given his move could allow Newcastle to sign Piatek. Whether Leeds are willing to part with £15million, though, remains to be seen.
