Tottenham will be desperate to keep hold of their key players this summer as they plan a title challenge for next season. There will be interest from other clubs as the team have had an excellent two years under Mauricio Pochettino. Barcelona have been linked to Christian Eriksen and he told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet that he would find it difficult to turn down the Spanish giants:
“I have been there [at Barcelona] at some point and it was not very good. Barcelona are a great club and I do not think there are many who say no to Barcelona. But there is interest and there is definite interest. Before there is concrete interest, I have no opinion on it. There are always rumours about footballers. I still have a contract with Tottenham a few more years.
“In the future I see myself at the highest level. That’s what I dream about. It can be about two to three years. It may be in another club or it could be Tottenham if we have come all the way up.”
These quotes need to be treated with caution, but there is no need for Tottenham fans to be too alarmed by them. It is usual for a player to be interested in a move to Barcelona and there is yet to be any firm interest shown by the Spanish side. Eriksen finished the season with 12 goals and 23 assists across all competition, which is an incredible return and shows that he is one of the best creative midfielders in the world.
Given Andres Iniesta is approaching the end of his career, there will be a number of midfielders linked to the Nou Camp and the Tottenham man has a profile that will appeal to the Spanish club. If Eriksen was to leave Spurs, Barcelona would be a good fit for him and provide him with the stage to take his game to the next level. The Danish midfielder is only 25 and will improve further in the future.
Fortunately for Tottenham supporters, there hasn’t been a credible story that suggests Barcelona are indeed interested in Christian Eriksen. These quotes come after he was asked about Los Cules in Denmark and he is understandably interested in a move at some point, but that is unlikely to be this summer. The Spanish club have more pressing needs, with a right-back being a priority in the transfer market.
