Tottenham are considering a bid worth €30 million (£27.3 million) for Barcelona’s midfield ace Denis Suarez, according to the print edition of Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo. They say that Spurs are interested in the Spanish under 21 international alongside Italian side Napoli.
What would he bring to Wembley?
Suarez is an exciting creative midfielder. Good on the ball with an excellent first touch and skill, his technical abilities would make him one of the best in the Tottenham squad. He also possesses great vision and can pick a pass out of nowhere.
The 23-year-old is also capable of playing in a deeper midfield role or out wide, which may appeal to Mauricio Pochettino. Having played in such a role for Barcelona at times over the past year, defensive discipline was also instilled in him by now Valencia boss Marcelino whilst at Villarreal.
Suarez also has experience of living in England having spent time at Manchester City as a youngster, and that may play to his advantage and help to adapt quickly. Given how late into the transfer window he would be signing, that could be crucial.
Is a move likely?
Tottenham monitored the midfielder closely before he joined Barcelona last summer, according to The Sun, so it may not be a surprise to see them return for the Spaniard. With a midfielder clearly high on their list of priorities this summer, it seems highly likely that Suarez could be on the radar.
However, Catalan newspaper Sport say that any deal this summer is unlikely. They say that whilst Ernesto Valverde is not counting on him to be a regular starter, he does seem him as a valuable option to have within his squad.
The player himself is reportedly not happy at a role on the fringes of the squad, despite having publicly stated his desire to stay and fight for his place in the team. Having failed to convince in his debut season at the Camp Nou, this campaign could be his last chance of doing so.
