Tottenham Hotspur might be thinking about life after Christian Eriksen, by plotting a move for Mateo Kovacic.
The Real Madrid star is currently on loan at Chelsea and has made 13 Premier League appearances so far.
The Croatian World Cup finalist has looked impressive in parts but hasn’t pulled up trees by any means.
His position in the team is currently under threat from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley.
It is not known at this stage if Chelsea will try to sign Kovacic permanently, but it looks as though if they do, they might have some competition from their London neighbours.
As reported by AS, Spurs are ready to throw their hat into the mix – but does that mean they could be about to admit defeat over Eriksen?
Kovacic in, Eriksen out?
If such a report is to be believed then one has to wonder whether Tottenham are lacking confidence over keeping Eriksen at the club.
The player and the club have been locked in contract talks for months, and as things stand at the moment he only has 18 months left on his current deal.
It’s thought that the player would like to be placed in the same pay bracket as Dele Alli and Harry Kane.
Perhaps there is an unwillingness to make that happen on the part of Daniel Levy, or maybe the lure of Real Madrid is lingering and he fancies following in the footsteps of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale.
Whatever the reason, Eriksen still hasn’t put pen to paper.
One just gets the feeling that this ‘interest’ in Kovacic suggests a lack of confidence in keeping the Danish superstar.
