Palace fan’s fantasies of Michy Bathsuayi donning the South London Red and Blue quickly evaporated as reports filed in that the young Belgian was to have a medical at Chelsea after a €40 million bid was accepted by Olympique de Marseille – €2 million more than what Crystal Palace offered.
The dream was nice while it lasted, but Palace must begin to shift their attention to other striking options, especially after the abysmal season their strikers had, and the fact that last season’s top-scorer; Dwight Gayle, has recently joined Newcastle United.
In light of the disappointment, over the next few pages, here are three options that Pardew is potentially turning to fill the void and heal the disappointmen of the Selhurst Park faithful. Let us know your thoughts on the selection in the comments below.
Robin Van Persie
No, you read that right. Crystal Palace have apparently been offered the former Arsenal and Manchester United goal-scorer. No price has been named yet, but the flying Dutchman is said to be interested in a return to England. This move is a wild-card and Alan Pardew should not bet on him alone to fix Palace’s striker woes.
Where Van Persie appears to be an attractive signing is in the fact that he is a proven Premier League goal-scorer over many years. The 32 year-old has 144 Premier League strikes to his name and is one of the greatest forwards to have ever played in England’s top-flight. The Dutchman has an eye for the spectacular and can pick a goal out from seemingly close to nothing.
RVP may be approaching the twilight of his career and as a result, may at this point be beyond his sell-buy date. His move to Fenerbahce demonstrated that he was ready to wind down his career after developing a bad relationship at Manchester United with compatriot and former national team manager Louis Van Gaal.
RVP could be a gem simply in need of a dusting and a nice white-haired man to tell him he’s good at football, or he could be a waste of space on the club’s payroll, much like Emmanuel Adebayor was last year.
