Frank de Boer

The Ajax legend and current manager became the first manger ever in the Dutch league to win the Eredivisie four times consecutively, but relinquished the title to PSV last year. It was widely reported that he turned down an approach from Liverpool a couple of years ago but suggestions are that de Boer wants to manage in the Premier League as he looks to take the next step in his young managerial career. Now aged 45, taking on a job like Newcastle could be what is needed to prove to the football world that he has what it takes in the toughest league of all. With respect to Ajax and Holland, he is not doing that currently.

De Boer enjoyed playing spells in Spain, Scotland, Holland, Turkey and Qatar but he sees England as the next destination in his management career. Asked about joining a Premier League club last year, he said “Yes, I think every year it comes closer of course. I’m looking maybe for another adventure. If there is an interesting club that I think with my quality I can make that team better – if I can, than I will take that chance.” De Boer would surely prefer to finish the full season with Ajax if he were to consider Newcastle again so that could be a stumbling block if Mike Ashley acted quickly and sacked McClaren sooner rather than later.
