Gregory van der Wiel
The PSG full-back has a great pedigree winning both Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie, and playing a part in the Dutch squad that got to the 2010 World Cup final. He is 28 and still has a lot to offer a top six club. The Dutchman is a modern day full-back, who likes to attack and has a good delivery when he gets into crossing positions. In 16 league matches this year, he has two goals and three assists, showing his quality in the attacking half of the field.
The Dutch international will have a lot of options available to him this summer. There will be Premier League clubs interested and one that perhaps should be is Leicester City. The newly crowned Premier League champions will be looking to add proven Champions League quality to their squad and the full back would qualify as that. Danny Simpson is dependable, but he isn’t good enough if Leicester City want to make the next step.
John Terry
The Chelsea captain could yet stay at the club with the final decision down to new coach Antonio Conte, but if he does depart, he will be a great signing for somebody. He has plenty of experience, after guiding Chelsea through their most successful period in their history. Meanwhile, he has shown this season that he still has the quality to play at the highest level, but it may be beneficial to leave Stamford Bridge in order to breathe fresh life into his career. Chelsea have had a poor season and may opt to embrace a fresh start and that would include letting their captain leave the club.
In terms of where he could move next, he could remain in the Premier League for one of the sides in mid-table. Alan Pardew has already talked about being interested in Terry, which would allow the defender to remain in London. He may be tempted to move to one of the up and coming leagues, with both the MLS and China being attractive options due to the financial rewards.
Tom Carroll
The four players mentioned above are all proven and would be able to make an immediate impact. Tom Carroll is 23-years-old and has a lot of potential to be a good Premier League midfielder in years to come. He showed his qualities while on loan at Swansea, but he has struggled to break into the team at Spurs. The midfielder is a good passer of the ball and is excellent at transitioning the play from defence to attack. His attacking contribution isn’t strong, but that is an area of his game that will improve under the right coach.
Carroll represents a gamble for mid-table Premier League clubs and teams at the top of the Championship. As a free transfer and an Englishman, he offers the potential for a big profit in the future, while his wages are unlikely to be astronomical. He would be the perfect signing for clubs dropping into the Championship as he is cheap and would benefit from a season in the second tier. He is also a potential Premier League starter, allowing clubs that go down to think of the long-term, as well as the immediate issue of bouncing back at the first attempt.
