Steve Bruce
Steve Bruce is a name that tends to be linked with every Premier League job going, most recently being rumoured to be in the frame for the Newcastle job before they appointed Rafael Benitez. Bruce has a wealth of experience in the Championship so it is no surprise to see him as one of the bookies favourites for the hot-seat at Villa Park.
Bruce is currently overseeing his Hull City team push for promotion in the Championship, they sit in fourth and are eight points off the summit with a game in hand over Burnley. If Aston Villa were to come calling would Bruce drop ship? I would be surprised, he seems settled at Hull and has now become part of the furniture, but money talks.
He may feel that he fancies a big challenge and there is no bigger challenge around at the moment than Aston Villa. Hull are by no means guaranteed of promotion, in all likelihood they will be one of the four play-off teams and we have seen before how unpredictable that can be. Aston Villa could be a good job for an experienced manager providing they get their house in order, any incoming manager will demand assurances and that is undeniably necessary on their part.
Bruce’s CV is not overly impressive based on statistics but he has learned what it takes to get out of the Championship as he did with Birmingham back in 2007, that should be the primary piece of criteria that Aston Villa look at, it is a necessity. It is all very well looking at managers with Premier League experience, but the Championship is a completely different monster entirely.
One hurdle to overcome would be the Birmingham stigma that he would carry, it is something that forced Alex McLeish out of Villa Park, Aston Villa fans really aren’t in a position to be overly judgmental and tribal at this stage. The club is in dire straits and no name should be off the table, Villa are at a the biggest crossroads of their history and the wrong appointment now could see them become just like Blackburn Rovers, Leeds United and Fulham to name just a few.
