David Moyes is understandably biding his time in returning to football management, his last two jobs have rightly been labelled as failures, firstly as Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement at Manchester United followed by the Real Sociedad appointment. He deserves credit for having the courage to take on both those jobs, much like Garde it was the wrong time for him.

If there is one thing Moyes has been good at in his years of management it is being the underdog, with what is going on at Everton under Roberto Martinez it is fair to say he may have been undervalued in his time at Goodison. He is definitely the type of man Aston Villa would need, he notoriously plays the percentages and will always start with a solid foundation in the back four, which is what made him so successful at Everton.

Apart from his short stint at Old Trafford, Moyes has never been blessed with an endless amount of funds so working on a tight budget is not something that would bother the Scot as he has had to wheel and deal before, something that the next Villa manager will have to get to grips with very quickly indeed.

In his 11 years at Everton he had a win percentage of 42% which is astounding when you think for most of his reign he was having to sell their best players. He won the “League Managers Association Manager of the Year” three times in 2003,2005 and 2009.

2004/05 he will still regard as his finest achievement, finishing fourth in the Premier League  and securing a Champions League qualification place. This was the first in the club’s history and an amazing feat, those are the kind of credentials that Randy Lerner and his board will surely be looking at when recruiting this Summer.
