Everton are interested in making a move for Moussa Sissoko after missing out on the Frenchman last summer. L’Equipe, who were referenced by the IB Times and Le10Sport, reports that the Toffees have made a loan move for the French international. However, Spurs want to recoup as much of the £30 million that they spent on the midfielder 12 months ago.
The 27-year-old is surplus to requirements in North London and it is looking increasingly likely that he is moved on before the end of the transfer window. He started only eight Premier League matches during the last campaign and he will want to seek regular football ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
Would he be a good signing for Everton?
The Toffees have received a lot of praise for their recruitment this summer, but a move for Moussa Sissoko wouldn’t be a good one. The Frenchman showed flashes of his ability at Newcastle, but he only turned up when it suited him and his lack of work rate contributed to the club’s relegation during the 2015/16 season.
Although he impressed at Euro 2016 with a couple of good performances, it was a surprise that he was purchased by Tottenham as he had never consistently shown that he should be playing for a top six club.
His versatility makes him attractive, as he can play as a winger and a central midfielder. Everton are well stocked in the number ten position, but Sissoko would offer a good option on the right-hand side.
If they managed to bring him to Goodison Park on a loan deal, he would provide good competition for places, but his struggles in the Premier League mean that he isn’t worthy of a significant investment, as Tottenham learned.
Last season, he contributed two assists and no goals, which is nowhere near good enough for a £30 million player. There are better players that Everton could bring in, but if it was a loan, he could have a part to play.
How likely is a loan move to Everton?
Everton were in the running for his signature last summer, but it would be a huge surprise if they made another move during this window. They were rejected by the player and his stock has dropped significantly since then.
He has shown that he isn’t good enough for a top six club and the Toffees have the ambition to reach that level. Although Tottenham would be interested in moving him on, it makes little financial sense to loan out a player to cost £30 million only 12 months ago.
They will be looking to move him on permanently, but there will be few interested clubs that will be willing to pay the sort of money that Tottenham will want. Spurs need to acknowledge that it would be better to move him on quickly and a return to France seems to be the most likely move for the midfielder. Everton may be interested in a loan, but they shouldn’t be looking for a permanent transfer.
