Could Manchester United’s Chris Smalling rebuild his career at Arsenal?

As it seems increasingly likely that his Old Trafford career is coming to an end, The Sun report that the arrival of Victor Lindelof could see Chris Smalling forced out of Manchester United.

However, in a surprising twist, they suggest that Arsene Wenger is keeping one eye on the central defender’s situation and could look to make a summer move for the England international as he looks to shore up the Arsenal defence.

What would he bring to the Emirates?

Having overcome a questionable start to life in Manchester, Smalling has proven himself to be one of the most reliable and established centre-backs in the league. A regular for his country, Smalling is one of the best English defenders in the country.

Strong physically both in the air and with the ball at his feet, he could add some much needed steel to the Gunners’ defence which is all too often criticised for being too weak or fragile.

With experience at the highest level, it wouldn’t take much for Wenger to get the best out of Smalling and he would more than welcome having the confidence of his manager behind him. That’s something he clearly doesn’t have at United.

Is a move likely?

It seems like Smalling will be on his way out this summer with Jose Mourinho adding reinforcements to a defence which is already well covered by the likes of Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Eric Bailly.

United will need to sell in order to fund their summer rebuild and Smalling is bound to attract attention from across the Premier League. For that reason, he could be an attractive and easy sale.
