According to reports surfacing from Italy over the course of Wednesday afternoon, Manchester United could potentially be turning their attention towards RB Leipzig winger Emil Forsberg.
Jose Mourinho said himself in a press conference the other day – as per BBC Sport – that he is still searching for a wide man before the season starts, strengthening his variety of attacking options.
And with the rumours, as reported by Sky Sports, linking Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic to Old Trafford proving fruitless as August draws closer, Calciomercato have claimed that the 25-year-old Swede is now firmly on United’s radar.
Would Forsberg be able to adapt to the Premier League?
There is no disputing the fact the RB Leipzig enjoyed one of the best – if not the best – season of anybody in Europe last year, pushing Bayern Munich all the way in their debut Bundesliga outing.
A lot has been said in the mainstream media about the influence of midfield dynamo Naby Keita, with Liverpool seemingly calling, but Forsberg was just as key to RB Leipzig’s success, if not more.
Eight goals and nine assists from his natural position out wide gave the German side a constant outlet from the flanks, and whenever he received possession of the ball there was a big sense of anticipation.
The thing about Forsberg is that he seems to make things happen in the blink of an eye, and last season he created 94 chances – 34 more than anybody on the title-winning Bayern Munich team.
His innovative nature and ability to create chances from out of nowhere is the sort of characteristic that could make United serious contenders this year – not just domestically, but in the Champions League too – and it is his intelligence to create space for teammates that makes him an extremely potent asset.
The 25-year-old also has the necessary experience at international level, featuring 27 times for Sweden over the past three years (scoring five times), and he could settle in quickly at United given the chance.
Is a move to Old Trafford likely?
If the reports in Calciomercato this afternoon have any truth behind them – which isn’t 100% out of the question – then United have already made contact with Forsberg’s representatives (who also represent recent summer signing Victor Lindelof) to enquire about a potential move to the Premier League.
In spite of this, it seems the only eventuality in which United would spark a genuine interest in Forsberg would be if a move for Perisic is completely shut down, and with BBC Sport claiming, earlier, that Inter Milan are now prepared to listen to offers, it seems like RB Leipzig may keep their man for another year.
