Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier is set to join Spanish side Atletico Madrid this summer, according to Football.London. They report that the England international is undergoing a medical with Los Colchoneros ahead of a £25 million move to the Wanda Metropolitano.
So could that transfer give Everton a chance of signing an apparent transfer target this summer?
It was reported by the Liverpool Echo last month that Everton were interested in the Colombian defender, valued at around £11 million.
Everton’s sporting director Marcel Brands had previously signed the full-back from Sporting Lisbon during his time at PSV Eindhoven.
Brands was a huge fan of the player. As he told the PSV website in 2015, Arias is considered the ‘perfect’ modern defender by Everton’s transfer supremo.
But any interest in Arias has appeared to cool in recent weeks. One reason was the 27-year-old’s involvement in the Copa America. Another, however, was likely Atletico’s complete lack of full-back options.
With Juanfran leaving on a free and returning loanee Sime Vrsaljko out until 2020 with a knee problem, the Spaniards were desperately short at right-back.
But now, with Trippier on his way, Everton might have a chance of bringing Arias to Goodison Park after all.
It will be no surprise if negotiations are back on after this Tottenham exit.
