Tottenham were linked with a move for Lyon forward Memphis Depay back in November (Calciomercato) and some recent reports could hand the club hope of reviving a deal once again.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Tottenham are keen to add Lyon’s head of recruitment, Florian Maurice to their backroom ranks during the summer.
The 46-year-old is a former player himself having represented Lyon, Marseille, PSG and also earned six caps with the France national team.
If Tottenham can pull off the capture of a well-respected backroom member it could hand them a big advantage if Depay’s availability ever came into question again.
Depay flopped during a spell at Manchester United earlier in his career but he has been busy reviving his playing days at Lyon.
During the 2019/20 campaign, he has scored 14 goals despite picking up a serious knee ligament injury back in December which has curtailed his season.
Given the quality he has displayed during his time at Lyon, however, it would be no surprise to see clubs come calling for him when he is back fit once again.
The 26-year-old has plunged 53 goals and registered 42 assists during his 134 games with the Ligue 1 outfit.
Lyon valued him at around £50 million when Tottenham were last interested and he’d be a superb capture for Jose Mourinho.
One stunning attribute with Depay is his ability to play in more than one position.
During this season alone he has operated as a striker, a No.10 and on both flanks for Lyon.
He might not have cut the mustard at United but that doesn’t mean he can’t still be a success in the Premier League.
Tottenham have endured horrendous luck with injuries this season. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min’s absence has hit Spurs particularly hard.
Having a player like Depay in his ranks would have seriously helped Mourinho this season and a player of his ilk would be an asset to his squad.
With that in mind, adding Maurice to the backroom ranks could tick all the boxes in terms of attracting Depay to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
