It may have surprised some Rangers fans when the Daily Record reported ahead of the final days of the January transfer window that Steven Gerrard was open to letting Jordan Jones leave Ibrox.
Jones only joined the Gers in the summer. And an injury sustained in September meant that he missed a large portion of the season. He only returned to the side in January.
Nevertheless, it appeared that Gerrard had made a ruthless decision and was willing to let him leave last month.
The Daily Record reported that the Gers hoped to move Jones on, along with another summer signing Brandon Barker.
However, the January window would close with both men still in Gerrard’s ranks. And it remains to be seen what the future holds for Jones and Barker.
But perhaps Jones can remain optimistic that he could still make the grade at Ibrox – thanks to one of his teammates.
It is remarkable to think that Borna Barisic looked to be destined for the exit at the end of last season.
The left-back struggled during his first campaign in Scotland, and the Daily Record reports that he may well have ended up leaving the club last summer.
Barisic has since produced an incredible turnaround. The catalyst arguably came with a winner against St Mirren. And since then, he has been one of Gerrard’s best performers.
The transformation was completed at the end of last month. Rangers announced on their official website that Barisic has signed a new contract until 2024.
There are definitely similarities between the Croatian and Jones.
The pair both produced superb displays against the Gers before their moves to Ibrox. They showed early promise following their moves. And they both struggled with injury before being linked with the exit before their spells had really begun.
So, while Gerrard may have been ready to let Jones go in January, the winger should make it his mission to follow Barisic’s lead and fight his way back into the fold.
