Could it be back to the bench for Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff?

Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff could see his game time cut short following the returns of Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-yueng.

The Englishman made his breakthrough for the first-team over the festive period as a result of injuries to Shelvey and Mo Diame, with Ki having gone away on Asia Cup duty with South Korea.

But according to the club’s official website, Shelvey is nearing full fitness agains after participating in Newcastle’s warm weather training camp in Spain.

Shelvey has been sidelined since January 5 with a thigh problem.

Ki is also likely to return soon, having returned from the UAE with a recurrence of hamstring problem. He was also pictured training with the first-team.

Longstaff back to the bench

Although Longstaff has impressed for the Magpies, it is unlikely he will keep his place as the club bid to stave off the threat of relegation.

Newcastle need their most experienced players out there, and Shelvey and Ki both have bags of it and also quality in possession.

New signing Miguel Almiron will surely play every game as the club’s new record signing, meaning rookie Longstaff may have to refamiliarise himself with the bench.

Isaac Hayden could well keep his place having stood out in the last few games, but Rafa Benitez siurely can’t afford to go without at least one of Shelvey or Ki at holding midfield.
