Could Inter Milan win the race to sign Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez this summer?

Alexis Sanchez will remain the centre of attention for the next few weeks as his future has yet to be resolved this summer. Although he has been away with Chile, his agent will have been working quietly behind the scenes, but there is no deal imminent to take the attacker from Arsenal.

Gazzetta Dello Sport report that Inter Milan have joined the race to sign the 28-year-old, as they want him to be the poster boy of the new era at the club. Since being taken over by Suning, the Serie A club have been more ambitious in the transfer market and this is a deal that would send a statement to the rest of Europe if they were to pull it off.

Would Inter Milan appeal to Alexis Sanchez?

It is difficult to know what Sanchez wants this summer as he plans his next move. Bayern Munich were interested, but the Chilean demanded high wages and that ended the Germans’ interest in him. Manchester City remain in the race, but Arsenal are determined not to sell to a league rival as it will make them appear weak to the rest of Europe.

Inter Milan represent an interesting option for Sanchez, but like the Gunners, they will not be in this season’s Champions League, which might complicate a possible deal.

That said, he does have a history in Italy and knows the league well from his time at Udinese. It is a style of football that suits him and he may find the project at Inter Milan an exciting one. One of the reported problems that he has with Arsenal, is the lack of progression, but Inter are clearly a team going in the right direction and the addition of Sanchez would make them contenders once again domestically.

As there is less competition in Italy, there would be a good chance that they qualified for the Champions League this season and, if the Chilean can be convinced of that, he may be open to a transfer. The finances that Suning have available to them mean that a healthy package would be offered to the 28-year-old if talks were to progress positively.

How likely is a move?

There are a number of weeks left in the transfer window and Sanchez’s future is likely to be a saga that drags on into August. It isn’t clear what his position is, as he may be required to see out the final year of his contract before seeking a free transfer. This would give him more power when it came to selecting his next club and mean that a move to another Premier League club would be on the cards.
