'Could hurt them': Paul Merson makes Leeds v Newcastle result prediction

Leeds United host Newcastle United at Elland Road in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Whites have struggled for much of the season, but they could make it three league wins in a row.

Leeds ran out 3-1 winners over Burnley at the start of the year.

Although West Ham beat them in the FA Cup, the Whites overcame the Hammers 3-2 in the league.

At present, Marcelo Bielsa’s charges 15th in the table, eight points above the bottom three.

Victory against Eddie Howe’s side would effectively end the Whites’ relegation fears.

Meanwhile, Newcastle remain in deep trouble, 19th in the table and four points from safety.

The Magpies have won just one game in the league this season, though they’ve drawn their last two.

That said, Newcastle were en route to victory against Watford, only for Joao Pedro to equalise late on.

Newcastle shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Leeds earlier this season.

However, the Magpies’ trip to Elland Road last season ended in a comprehensive 5-2 defeat.

“Leeds victory here”

Paul Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, fancies Leeds to edge Newcastle 2-1 in Yorkshire.

“Leeds managed a brilliant result against West Ham in their previous Premier League game,” he wrote.

“And this is suddenly not as big a match now.

“The pressure is off for Leeds – if they win this game, they’re safe.

“Leeds do give away too many chances, however, and I think the pace of Almiron could hurt them.

“I’m going to go with a Leeds victory here.

“Newcastle are struggling in the Premier League and can’t seem to win a game.

“They were in front against Watford last week but just couldn’t seem to hang on.

“I think Newcastle can find the back of the net here, but Leeds should be able to win this game.”
