'Could get a chance': Cascarino says Arsenal now have two uncapped Englishmen who could star at Euro 2024

Tony Cascarino thinks Eddie Nketiah and Folarin Balogun could shine for England at the next major tournament – Euro 2024.

That competition is just 18 months away and in his column for the Times, Cascarino namechecked the Arsenal pair as potential options by the time it rolls around.

In August 2022, Balogun moved on loan to French club Reims, while Nketiah remained at Arsenal after signing a new deal during the summer.

He is the man best placed to offer backup to the injured Gabriel Jesus and Cascarino has urged him to seize that opportunity.

Nketiah and Balogun could make England squad at Euro 2024

When discussing the alternatives for Harry Kane at that tournament in Germany, Cascarino said: “Cole Palmer and Folarin Balogun both have potential but the one who intrigues me is Eddie Nketiah.

“He’s yet to get a senior England cap but he is 23 and, with Gabriel Jesus injured, he could get another run in the Arsenal side, this time in a title race.

“He has something about him that reminds me of Ian Wright — his desire and quick movement to create and get chances. So the big question now is will he get a chance for Arsenal — or will they sign someone else in January?

“And if he does, can he show he can offer more than just that blitz at the end of last season? If he improves and scores goals in the next 18 months, Nketiah could get a chance in one of the forthcoming tournaments.”

Both Nketiah and Balogun have Under 21 international experience, with Nketiah being England’s record goalscorer at that level.

Neither of them is on the senior international radar yet and they are currently taking different routes to trying to get there.

Balogun is scoring goals out on loan but he would need to do more in Ligue 1 to impress Gareth Southgate, whereas if Nketiah can take up the goalscoring burden for Arsenal, he could jump the queue.
