The Arsenal fans who are keen to see Dani Ceballos move to the Emirates permanently were dealt a blow last week when the midfielder told Marca that he is still looking to make the grade with Real Madrid.
Ceballos arrived at the Emirates on loan in the summer. And he has quickly become an important part of Unai Emery’s plans.
There have been flashes of brilliance along the way. And there is definitely a sense that there is more to come from the Spaniard.
The Daily Mirror had suggested that the Gunners want to sign Ceballos permanently. But his comments while away on international duty suggest that he is expecting to return to the Bernabeu next summer.
However, perhaps fresh reports concerning one of his former teammates should catch Ceballos’s eye.
Marca has suggested that Los Blancos want Fabian Ruiz from Napoli as they look to bolster their ranks in the middle of the park.
The report notes that Madrid are not expecting to have a lot of luck in their attempt to sign Fabian. But their interest should certainly alert Ceballos, who came through the ranks at Real Betis at the same time as the 23-year-old.
Could Ceballos be forced into rethinking future?
If Fabian does end up moving to the Spanish capital, it is going to be even harder for Ceballos – who earns over £51,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – to break into Zinedine Zidane’s plans.
They both offer versatility in the middle of the park. And with Fabian joining the club more recently – if he does sign – it seems a safe bet to suggest that Ceballos will be the one to suffer from having greater competition.
With that in mind, he should perhaps look at his situation at Arsenal and wonder whether he would be better off seeking a permanent move to North London.
Ceballos has had a taste of regular football again since joining the Gunners. He will surely want to avoid returning to the periphery, even if that means leaving Madrid for good.
