Could Everton form Michael Keane and Chris Smalling combination?

Everton are reportedly interested in a move to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smaling, as his future at Old Trafford is uncertain.

According to the Sun, the 28-year-old’s deal with United expires in the summer and he’s already held talks about improving his current £90,000-a-week contract.

It is understood Jose Mourinho’s side do have the option to extend the centre-back’s deal by 12 months, but that won’t deter Everton from their interest in signing him.

The report details the Merseyside club could look to sign him on a free next summer of in January if his deal is extended.

Smalling could form an incredible reunion at Goodiosn Park with ex-teammate Michael Keane if he did end up joining the Toffees.

Keane, 25, was a highly-rated talent to come out of the United academy, while Smalling has been a first teamer since he joined from Fulham in 2010.

Legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was renowned for nurturing young talents, which is why it would have been no surprise to see him pair Keane and Smalling together eventually if his 27-year stretch had gone even further.

It would be interesting to see if the two come together at Everton to help form Silva’s backline, but Colombian Yerry Mina may have something to say about that if Smalling does join.
