'Could definitely happen': Journalist backs Tottenham to land £55m goal machine who's like Aguero
With Tottenham Hotspur qualifying for the Champions League, an exciting summer awaits on the transfer front.
Already Spurs have sealed the signing of Ivan Perisic, while Fraser Forster is reportedly on the verge of joining.
Now, one player reportedly on Tottenham’s radar long-term could be likelier than ever to join.
That player is Inter Milan and Argentina striker Lautaro Martinez.
Inter were apparently reluctant to let him go after they sold his strike partner Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea.
And in October, Martinez penned a new contract at the San Siro, seemingly putting an end to that saga.
However, speculation linking the strike with a move away has resurfaced again.
Fabrizio Romano, speaking on the Que Golazo podcast in April, claimed Martinez could well be on the move.
He stated: “(Spurs) wanted him last summer, could be a good possibility.
They wanted him, but Inter sold Lukaku to Chelsea, so it was impossible for them to sell both Lukaku and Lautaro.
“This summer, I think it could be a possibility.”
Now, Jacque Talbot has told GiveMeSport that he feels Inter’s financial problems could see Martinez on the move.
“Inter Milan need to make money, they need to sell players to make money,” wrote the journalist.
“They’re in debt, they need to make about 50 million euros.
“Getting someone like Martinez is on Spurs’ list and could definitely happen.”
“Always participating in the move”
Tottenham really could do with bringing in a new centre-forward.
While Harry Kane is a world-class striker, he can’t shoulder the goalscoring burden throughout a 50-plus game season.
According to Italian publication Corriere della Sera, Inter have lowered their asking price to between £50m and £55m.
That’s a reasonable amount for a striker as prolific, and with as high a ceiling, as Martinez.
Since joining Inter, Martinez has registered 74 goals and 24 assists from 181 outings.
And for Argentina, he has 19 goals from 37 caps.
In 2020, Albiceleste legend Hernan Crespo compared Martinez to Sergio Aguero.
“Lautaro could well be the new Sergio Aguero. He’s not as sharp in his dribbling, but he is more of a team player than Kun.
“Lautaro is always participating in the move, so he can play as a lone centre-forward or with another striker like Romelu Lukaku, even in a trident.
“I really like his mentality.”
