Could Chris Mepham deal be good news for Tottenham’s pursuit of Nathan Ake?

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe finally got his man yesterday with the arrival of Chris Mepham from Brentford. The Wales international was a long-term target for the Cherries and they spent a reported £12 million to bring him to the South Coast.

It is a great move from Bournemouth, with Mepham regarded a top young central defender.

But could the arrival of Mepham also be good news for Tottenham Hotspur?

As reported by Sky Sports before Christmas, the Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake is on the radar of Tottenham.

The Dutch international is considered a potential long-term replacement for Jan Vertonghen as a versatile left-sided defender. Bournemouth, reportedly, value the player at £40 million, and Tottenham like the look of the 23-year-old.

No deal is likely this month. Tottenham have pressing matters elsewhere in the team, such as central midfield and up front. But in the summer, Spurs want to increase their homegrown player quota, something Ake qualifies for after being at Chelsea from the age of 15.

Mepham’s arrival could undoubtedly help Spurs in their pursuit of Ake. Bournemouth now have a viable replacement for his services and after the amount of money they have recently spent, bringing in some cash will surely be a necessity in the summer.

This £12 million deal might just help Tottenham get a future starting centre-back in the summer.
