Reports over the past couple of days are suggesting that Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is moving ever-closer to a reunion with Jose Mourinho by signing for Manchester United this summer.
With the Independent reporting that the Blues are closing in on securing Monaco’s young midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko, regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge could be put in doubt for the Serbian next year.
That is why, according to the Manchester Evening News, Matic has already been engaged in talks with Manchester United and expressed his interest at linking up with previous boss Jose Mourinho.
What impact could the Serbian have at Old Trafford?
Perhaps the most appealing thing about Nemanja Matic is that he typifies the cliché of ‘what you see is what you get’, using his six-feet three-inch frame to bring a no-nonsense approach to his football.
His stature is certainly imposing and, for somebody of his size, he’s surprisingly quick to accelerate after players; it’s this combination of size and speed that makes him the perfect modern day footballer.
Under a manager that loves playing the possession game in Mourinho, Matic lends himself perfectly to sitting at the back of the midfield and keeping things ticking along, looking for the right ball forward.
On the defensive side of his game there’s few who can battle as well as the Serbian, possessing a dogged determination on the pitch and a general willingness to snuff out opposition attacks.
There’s no doubt that the 28-year-old knows where the goal is either, having one of the sweetest left-foots in the Premier League on his day as he showed with a thunderbolt in the FA Cup semi-final.
Additionally, the advantage of bringing in Matic – as opposed to someone used to playing in a foreign league – would be huge, as his knowledge and experience of the English top-flight combined with his previous spell under the Manchester United boss would enable him to settle in almost immediately.
Yet, perhaps most importantly for Mourinho’s side is that, with Matic operating from deep, it would free up the likes of Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera to be far more influential in the final third.
It’s been clear to see that this is where Pogba in particular has thrived this season, and with the defensive cover of Matic behind him it would allow the 23-year-old to be more daring in the attack.
This in itself would give United a more well-rounded team, and finally give Pogba the opportunity to develop in one particular role on the pitch rather than be used as a versatile utility man in midfield.
