Newcastle United are said to be interested in a cut-price deal to sign Steven Caulker.

The Mirror claim the Magpies are considering a late swoop for the former England defender, who is currently playing his football with Alanyaspor in Turkey.

He joined them in January but only on a short-term deal. He now has one year left, meaning he could be available for as little as £2 million.

Caulker was once a promising centre-half, and caught the eye whilst at Swansea City, Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers.

Bruce is said to be a long-term admirer of the 27-year-old, and it will be interesting to see if he swoops before Thursday’s deadline.

TBR’s view

Bruce moving for Caulker could mean he goes back on his word about Ciaran Clark.

The Magpies manager recently said the former Aston Villa man’s potential exit was ‘not going to happen’ with Florian Lejeune recovering from injury (Chronicle).

It had been reported that £35,000-a-week defender Clark (Spotrac) could be sold this summer, with The Chronicle reporting Crystal Palace and Bristol City’s interest.

Perhaps Bruce will now change his stance on Clark, with Jetro Willems having been signed as cover at left-back – Clark’s secondary position.
