'Could be happening soon': Everton now closing in on signing 'fantastic' £15m attacker - journalist

According to The Telegraph’s John Percy, Everton are in talks to sign Burnley’s Dwight McNeil.

McNeil had been linked with a move to Newcastle earlier in the window, but Everton now appear to be in pole position to poach the England under-21 international.

Percy said in a tweet, “Another player departure from Burnley could be happening soon… Everton are in talks to sign winger Dwight McNeil and hopeful of agreeing a deal.”

McNeil would be the first attacking signing made by Lampard this summer, with James Tarkowski the only confirmed incoming so far.

McNeil deserves another Premier League opportunity, Everton could be the right destination

Burnley suffered a difficult season last year, being relegated to the Championship after several seasons of flirting with the drop.

McNeil had been one of the stand-out stars at Turf Moor side since his breakthrough in 2019, and hardly missed a game for the Clarets after making his debut.

New Burnley manager Vincent Kompany would have been hoping to keep McNeil in his effort to return straight to the Premier League, but it was always going to be difficult to keep a talent like the ‘fantastic’ winger in the second tier.

Lampard will be pleased to bring in McNeil, who can look at the development of another young player in Anthony Gordon for evidence of how he may improve if he joins the Toffees.

Gordon has been offered a new contract at Everton after speculation he may join Spurs or Newcastle, and if Lampard can count on the two young Englishmen at Goodison Park next season, it would go a long way to improving on last year’s performance.
