Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Aston Villa are closing in on the permanent signing of Robin Olsen.

The Villans brought the Roma goalkeeper to Villa Park on loan in January.

Olsen was previously on loan at Sheffield United, but that spell was cut short to enable him to link up with Villa.

The 32-year-old made one appearance for Steven Gerrard’s side in 2021-22.

It came on the final day of the Premier League season against eventual champions Manchester City.

Despite Olsen’s lack of regular action, it looks as though Gerrard loved what he saw from the Sweden international.

Romano, taking to Twitter, claimed that Villa are getting closer to reaching a full agreement with Roma.

The Villans ‘want to keep Olsen at the club’ and could soon trigger his €3.5m (£3m) buy option clause.

Although Olsen hasn’t had much regular game time in recent years, he’s clearly a high-calibre goalkeeper.

He remains Sweden’s first-choice stopper, with an impressive 56 caps to his name.

Olsen starred for his nation at Euro 2020, helping them reach the last 16.

His performance in the 0-0 draw with Spain earned him widespread praise.

“He was absolutely incredible,” The Guardian quoted Alexander Isak as saying.

Meanwhile, Victor Lindelof added: “He was fantastic, he saved us. I am going to give him a big hug and say thank you.”

It’s important for any club – particularly one in the Premier League – to have a great deputy goalkeeper.

While Emi Martinez is a stopper of the highest calibre, if he was to suffer an injury or suspension, then Olsen is a superb stand-in.
