Could Adam Forshaw play again for Leeds this season?

Leeds United fans would have been forgiven for having a wry smile on their faces when it was announced that the season would be put on ice shortly after their return to the top of the Championship.

Of course, it is right that football has taken a back seat for the time-being. But the postponement of the campaign will be particularly agonising for Whites fans who may have allowed themselves to dream of being on the cusp of promotion by the time they faced Blackburn Rovers in early April.

Now they are holding their breath as they wait to found out whether that will be the day that sees the season resume.

The anxiety therefore, has some way to go before subsiding for Leeds fans. But there are also potential upsides to this current break in play for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.

It was confirmed by BBC Sport back in February that Adam Forshaw had undergone surgery on a hip injury that has kept him out since September.

At the time, it was suggested that the 28-year-old would miss the rest of the season. And that appeared to be a big blow for Leeds, who had lost four of their previous six games before the news was announced.

Forshaw had been superb during the opening weeks of the campaign. He had silenced a lot of his critics with some outstanding displays, providing the energy that made him the perfect foil for Kalvin Phillips.

BBC Sport’s report noted that the £4.5 million signing was expected to be back for pre-season ahead of the next campaign.

Could Forshaw benefit from season’s stoppage?

But given the stoppage in play this term, perhaps there is a possibility that Forshaw could still have a role to play depending on when the campaign resumes.

Of course, given Bielsa’s demands, it still looks unlikely that he will be ready to play a part this season. But if the campaign does go well into the summer, Forshaw can potentially set his sights on playing a role.

Leeds fans have been left surprised on a number of occasions in recent years as several players have returned much sooner than expected.

Perhaps, it may still be asking too much for Forshaw to make another appearance. But it would be a big boost for Leeds if his return coincided with their final few fixtures this season.
