Contract expiring next year, 'Welsh John Stones' perfect transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are being repeatedly linked with a number of centre-back options at present. The reason why is clear. Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld currently have uncertain futures at the club. Whilst Davinson Sanchez is a hope for the future, youngsters Juan Foyth and Cameron Carter-Vickers have not yet proved themselves as long-term options.

The list of young centre-back options linked with the club has seen plenty expensive young talent from around Europe. Matthijs de Ligt, Joachim Andersen and Nikola Milenkovic have all been mentioned.

All three come with hefty price-tags. But, a more suitable and likely more affordable option has emerged as a brilliant talent in the Championship this season.

Joe Rodon has been in exceptional form for Swansea City. Stepping up after the departures of Alfie Mawson and Federico Fernandez, he has swiftly earned widespread praise for his displays.

The 21-year-old’s composed but solid performances saw him called into the Wales squad for the first time recently and has been dubbed the ‘Welsh John Stones’ due to his style of play.

Quick and comfortable on the ball, he is a player suited to play in the Premier League. In the summer of 2017, he was linked with Manchester City, such is his ability to play out from the back.

Now he has proven himself in the Championship, Tottenham would be right to make a swoop for the player. The music to Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino’s ears will be his contract situation. Rodon is currently out of contract at the end of the season. Tottenham could, therefore, snap him up at a cut-price fee in January or, wait until the summer and sign him for a tribunal-set compensation package.

Rodon is exactly the sort of player Tottenham want and at just 21 is only going to get better. The fact he would be a cheap option is a massive added bonus that Spurs should capitalise on.
