Conte says it's 'really strange' Tottenham have had so many injuries this season
The North Londoners were woeful yet again. They had just two shots on target in the entire game compared to the hosts’ eight, which is really poor considering many of their regulars started the game yesterday.
One of Spurs’ best opportunities to win a trophy is now gone, and Conte believes injuries have played a big factor.
Conte says it’s ‘really strange’ Tottenham have had so many injuries this season
The Tottenham boss was asked about Harry Kane’s fitness after the Englishman was substituted at the hour mark last night. Conte revealed he knew his star striker was ‘really, really tired’ even before the game, but he was still forced to use him from the start.
The Italian claimed that an injury to Son Heung-min and the fact that Richarlison and Kulusevsli were both not ready to start last night meant that he had no choice but to push Kane.
He then claimed that what’s happening at Tottenham with respect to injuries is just ‘really strange’ at the moment, and he’s hoping he won’t have to face another situation like this in the future.
Conte said, as quoted by Football London: “It was a problem of tiredness (for Kane). Really, really tired and yesterday we had a soft training session and at one point he stopped himself to recover energy. But he’s okay.
“It’s only fatigue but it’s normal because Harry played every game. When you have a player like him it’s difficult to decide you don’t play with him.
“In this situation, also if I wanted to start with another player it was impossible because of injuries to Richarlison, Kulu and Lucas Moura, from the start of the season. We’re not having Lucas Moura from the start of the season but no one is talking about this. Then two weeks ago, also Sonny.
“Today honestly it was really difficult if Kane told me ‘coach maybe it’s better I don’t start today because I risk a lot to have an injury’. But I repeat it’s normal, what’s happening in his period is really strange. In the future, I hope we don’t face another situation like this.”
It was a big risk for Conte to start Kane last night with the World Cup just 10 days away.
The 29-year-old has played every single game in every competition so far this season, and it’s no surprise at all that he’s absolutely exhausted.
Things could’ve gone really wrong last night if Kane pulled up with an injury. That would’ve been a massive blow for both Tottenham and England, but thankfully for both parties, it seems like he’s fine.
Tottenham take on Leeds United this weekend in what will be an intense game. It’s the last fixture before the World Cup, and England fans will be hoping that Kane can get through that clash without hurting himself.
