UFC legend Conor McGregor has admitted that he has had conversations with buying shares in Celtic.
The Dublin-born MMA icon took to Twitter to reveal that an opportunity came up to acquire shares for the Hoops off Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond, who remains the largest shareholder of Celtic this day, with McGregor claiming that he could do ‘big things’ for the club if he was involved with the organisation.
McGregor has floated the idea around of acquiring a football club for some time, with the 32-year-old UFC superstar previously stating his intention to buy Manchester United following the collapse of the European Super League, though the sporting icon has close ties with Celtic.
The Irishman has formed a close friendship with former Celtic defender Kieran Tierney, with the now-Arsenal fullback revealing back in 2019 via the Express that McGregor aided the Scottish international from a groin injury and gave him a training programme that helped the 23-year-old Premier League star on the road to recovery.
TBR View: McGregor involvement will help raise Celtic’s international profile further
Despite their lack of silverware this season, Celtic remains one of the best-followed clubs in the United Kingdom and one of the most recognisable teams in Europe, with a vast social media following and international reach that some clubs in the English Premier League fail to achieve.
Yet having a name as big as McGregor attached to the club will be a huge boost to Celtic for their global appeal, with the Irish fighter one of the largest names in sport and one of the most publicly covered figures in the UFC world, and his potential involvement with the Scottish giants could be a big turning point for the club in future years.
