Connor Wickham’s Crystal Palace injury nightmare is compounded by recent setback

Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham returned to first team training this week, with the Englishman finally nearing a return to action yet again.

After making a brief substitute appearance against Everton in October, Wickham suffered another injury setback, exemplifying his fitness nightmare at Selhurst Park.

Signed in August 2015 from Sunderland, Wickham has made just 35 appearances in over three seasons in south London — a terrible record that reveals the forward’s torrid luck.

A series of serious injuries ruled Wickham out from November 2016 to October 2018, with his short cameo against Everton marking his return after almost two years out.

Yet in comments reported by football.london, Palace assist manager Ray Lewington revealed Wickham suffered a recent setback that has kept him out for over a month.

“The latest one was a hamstring, which he did in a warm up for a first team game,” Lewington said. “He has had calf strains, and it is those type of injuries. He has got to be patient.”

The striker’s frustration must be immense, as the blow of straining a muscle after recovering from a long-term injury is surely demoralising.

Crystal Palace supporters will be hoping Connor Wickham can overcome his latest injury and return to the Eagles first team for good this time, kickstarting the club’s misfiring attack in the process.
