New Sheffield Wednesday signing, Connor Wickham, appears to have dealt a blow to the Owls over his future.
Wickham arrived back at Hillsborough for yet another spell in S6. After being with Wednesday twice earlier in his career, he’s hoping to put his fitness worries behind him under Garry Monk.
However, the big striker has confirmed that he sees his future with Crystal Palace as things stand.
“I’ve still got a year left at Palace. I think the intention is to go back to Palace. The chairman has made that quite clear to me,” Wickham said. (Evening Standard)
“So as far as I’m concerned from Crystal Palace’s side this is for me to get the fitness, the development and whatever happens after that is for the future to hold. We’ll see what happens.”
Those comments from Wickham appear to put paid to any hopes the Owls had of landing him on a permanent deal.
The striker’s spell with Palace has been a torrid one. Injury after injury has hampered his chances of ever making a big impact at the club. However, he has been involved this season under Roy Hodgson.
Wickham scored eight times in just eleven appearances during his last spell with the Owls.
Garry Monk, then, will be hoping for much of the same from his new man.
Not what Wednesday fans want to hear – TBR View
While Wickham might just be speaking honestly, it’s hardly what you want to hear as an Owls fan.
It is apparent that the striker is simply at Hillsborough to build up his fitness. Of course, if goals come with that, then that’s the bonus Wednesday will get from the deal.
But you can’t help but think this isn’t ideal. The camp at Hillsborough is not at its happiest at the moment. Indeed, Garry Monk openly criticised some of his players just last week.
It will be interesting, then, to see if Connor Wickham can get a run of games under his belt and prove that he does indeed belong in the Premier League next season.
