Qatar-based side Al-Sadd have confirmed an agreement with Santi Cazorla just hours after the playmaker confirmed his exit from Villarreal on Instagram – and Arsenal fans are gutted that the playmaker is not back in north London.
Cazorla, 35, has been in stunning form for Villarreal since rejoining the Spanish side on a free transfer in the summer of 2018. Despite a career-threatening ankle problem, he has played 86 times for Villarreal in two seasons.
Last season, he scored a stunning 15 goals and created 11 more in 40 outings. Such form had linked Cazorla with another season or two in European football, with even a return to the Emirates touted by supporters.
However, Al-Sadd – who are managed by Barcelona legend Xavi – have announced that an agreement has been amde with the 81-time Spain international, and a deal will be completed when Cazorla travels to Qatar to get a deal done.
The Tweet from Al-Sadd’s official Twitter account is translated as: “Welcome Santi to our club. Wish you all the best and that we can get many titles together. Thank you very much.”
Cazorla clocked up 180 appearances for Arsenal during a six-year spell with the Gunners – which ended in the nightmare injury that even saw amputation considered. Now, back to his best, Arsenal fans wanted a return.
But instead, they have seen Cazorla swap his boyhood club of Villarreal for a move to the Middle East to replace ex-Atletico Madrid captain Gabi – who has left Xavi’s side this summer. Gunners fans are gutted on Twitter.
