Sunderland manager Jack Ross recalled midfielder Dylan McGeouch for last night’s League One clash with Accrington Stanley and he justified his selection.
After being left as an unused substitute against Portsmouth in the Checkatrade Trophy final, McGeouch was selected to start at the Wham Stadium.
And the Scottish midfielder thoroughly impressed fans with a dominant and controlled midfield performance.
Sunderland desperately needed a win to bolster their automatic promotion credentials and they cruised to a 3-0 victory.
McGeouch played a key role as Sunderland closed the gap to just three points with two games in hand on second-place Barnsley.
Sunderland fans raved about McGeouch after the game and voted him Man of the Match in a Twitter poll.
It has been a frustrating season for the 26-year-old since his summer move from Hibernian but he took his chance with both hands last night.
The Scottish midfielder last started a game in early January and has since managed just five minutes of action in the league.
But perhaps Ross will change his mind about McGeouch and start giving him more minutes.
Here are some tweets from Sunderland fans praising McGeouch for his midfield performance against Accrington.
Was a colossus last night. Won everything, harried and slotted passes…. awesome claim on a starting place
