Former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore has said that Jurgen Klopp must win a trophy for Liverpool in order to be considered a managerial great, according to the Sunday People, page 53, 17/03.
Klopp’s Liverpool went back to the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Fulham yesterday, thanks to goals by Sadio Mane and James Milner.
But Collymore feels that Klopp needs a trophy to cement his place at the top table of management. He said: “He still needs to life some silverware before I can hail him as one of the managerial greats.
“If as a manager you finish second a bunch of times, reach Champions League finals without winning them and miss out on the League Cup or FA Cup, then you cannot be seen as a great.”
“There hasn’t been a manager in football history who has been regarded as a great at any club without winning a trophy. Until Klopp wins one of the big two trophies, we can’t put him up there with even Rafa Benitez.”
Collymore does reference the good work that Klopp has done in terms of lifting the mood around Anfield but that cannot be swept aside if Manchester City sneak the Premier League and Liverpool fail to win the Champions League.
Of course the Anfield fanbase are desperate for a league title, but that doesn’t mean Klopp is not a great manager if he doesn’t win one.
